ITINERARY

Palcoyo Mountain Tour Itinerary

1. Pickup from your hotel in Cusco and departure from the city

The adventure begins very early in the morning. Your guide and driver will pick you up directly from your accommodation in Cusco or from a pre-arranged meeting point. From there, you will head south along the Interoceanic Highway, passing through valleys, traditional villages, and rural landscapes typical of the Andean region.

During the journey, you will see how the landscape changes: from the city to the countryside, passing through green hills, cultivated fields, and distant mountains.

2. Stop in the village of Checacupe

On the way, there is a brief stop in Checacupe, a small village that holds an interesting cultural legacy. There you can visit:

  • The Inca bridge: made of ichu (Andean grass) ropes, a symbol of ancient engineering.
  • The colonial stone bridge: built during the colonial era over the same river.
  • The colonial church: with gilded altarpieces, Cusco paintings, and coffered ceilings.

This spot is ideal for taking photos and getting a first taste of the living history of the South Valley.

3. Andean Breakfast at a Local Restaurant

After visiting Checacupe, you’ll stop in a nearby town (such as Combapata or Cusipata) to enjoy a traditional breakfast. They usually offer Andean bread, eggs, fruit, and hot infusions such as coca tea or muña, ideal for helping with the altitude.

This time also serves as a time to acclimatize and prepare for the hike.

4. Ascent by Vehicle to Palcoyo

From the restaurant, the journey continues along an unpaved road that gradually climbs into the high Andes. On this stretch, you’ll see:

Spectacular landscapes with streams, rocky slopes, and shepherds with llamas and alpacas.

Possible sightings of Andean birds such as the caracara or even condors if you’re lucky.

Partial views of the Ausangate mountain, one of the most sacred peaks in the Andes.

5. Hike and Explore Palcoyo

Once you reach the starting point, approximately 4,800 meters above sea level, a gentle, almost flat hike begins along well-marked trails. Along the way, you’ll see:

Three colored mountains: smaller but with visible multicolored bands due to the oxidation of minerals.

The Stone Forest: a natural formation of stone pillars resembling a fortress or petrified forest.

Natural viewpoints: from where you can observe the valleys and the Ausangate mountain.

The hike is short, approximately 1 to 1.5 km, with gentle climbs. It is ideal for people of all ages and moderate physical fitness. You’ll have time for photos, a break, and to listen to your guide’s explanations about Andean geology and worldview.

6. Free time at the summit

Once you reach the panoramic points, you can rest, enjoy the fresh air, and take photographs of the surreal landscape. It’s also an opportunity to meditate, make symbolic offerings, or simply enjoy the silence of the Andes.

7. Return to the van

After exploring the area, you can leisurely return along the same path to the parking lot where the van is waiting. There, you will be provided with trekking poles if you need them for the descent.

8. Lunch at a local restaurant

On the return trip, there’s a break at a rustic restaurant to enjoy a buffet lunch or Andean menu, which may include:

  • Quinoa or corn soups
  • Chicken, meat, or vegetable stews
  • Rice, native potatoes, and local desserts
  • Vegetarian options available

This is a perfect time to share the experience with other travelers and chat about what they’ve experienced.

9. Return to Cusco

After lunch, the group returns to Cusco via the same route. The return journey is usually leisurely, ideal for resting or enjoying the scenery. On the way back, you can see the light changing over the Andes as sunset approaches.

10. Arrival and Farewell

The tour ends with drop-off at your hotel or a central location in Cusco. You’ll have spent a full day surrounded by mountains, colors, and vibrant culture, with a relaxing hike suitable for everyone.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendations for the Palcoyo Mountain Excursion

Before the tour:

  • Acclimatize in Cusco at least 1 or 2 days before the tour. The altitude at Palcoyo exceeds 4,800 meters above sea level, so it is important for your body to adapt to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Get a good night’s rest the night before, as the tour starts very early and requires energy.
  • Consult your doctor if you have health conditions sensitive to altitude, such as high blood pressure, asthma, or heart problems.

What to bring:

  • Layered clothing: thermal shirt, fleece, and a waterproof or windproof jacket.
  • Comfortable pants: trekking or athletic pants, resistant to cold and wind.
  • A hat for the cold, gloves, and a scarf or neck gaiter.
  • A hat or cap and sunglasses with UV protection.
  • Trekking shoes or sneakers with good grip and thick soles (the terrain may be uneven or wet).

Useful accessories:

  • Sunscreen (radiation is intense at altitude).
  • Lip balm with SPF.
  • Reusable water bottle (bring at least 1 liter).
  • Energy snacks: dried fruit, cereal bars, chocolate, etc.
  • Trekking poles (some tours include them).
  • Small daypack to carry your belongings.

For altitude sickness (soroche):

  • Bring coca leaves or coca candies, muña tea, or coca mate.
  • Consider bringing altitude sickness pills (such as sorojchi pills or similar), after consulting a doctor.
  • Drink plenty of water before and during the tour.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages the night before.

Optional extras:

  • Camera or smartphone with a charged battery.
  • Power bank (there is no signal or power in the area).
  • Some cash (in Peruvian soles) for personal expenses or tips.

Other important recommendations

  • This hike is not recommended for people with respiratory or heart problems, or high blood pressure, unless they are well controlled.
  • You don’t need to be a great athlete, but moderate physical fitness is recommended.
  • Respect nature and local communities: don’t leave trash, take rocks, or interfere with wildlife.
  • Be patient with the weather: it can change quickly. While it’s sunny in Cusco, it can be windy, cold, or even snowy in Palcoyo.

Doing the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life, and a big part of that was thanks to the outstanding service and care provided by Marvelous Peru. From the very first contact, their team was professional, friendly, and informative. They answered all of our questions quickly and gave us clear, detailed information about the itinerary, what to pack, and what to expect on the trail. The logistics were flawless — every transfer was on time, the campsites were well set up, and the support team was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the journey. A special mention goes to our guide, who was not only knowledgeable about Inca history, the local flora and fauna, and the geography of the Andes, but also passionate and deeply connected to the region's culture. His insights truly enriched our experience. The trek itself was absolutely breathtaking. Each day brought new landscapes: from the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Salkantay Mountain to lush cloud forests, turquoise glacial lakes, and ancient Inca trails. The route was well-paced, with plenty of breaks, and we always felt safe and supported. It’s a physically challenging trek, but Marvelous Peru made sure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of. One of the highlights was definitely the food. Considering we were in remote mountain areas, the meals exceeded all expectations. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. There were generous portions, local flavors, and even vegetarian options — a huge plus for some of us in the group. Our camp chef deserves a medal! Reaching Machu Picchu on the final day felt incredibly rewarding. After five days of hiking through such diverse and awe-inspiring terrain, standing before one of the world's wonders felt even more magical. It was the perfect end to a journey that tested us physically and rewarded us spiritually. I wholeheartedly recommend Marvelous Peru to anyone considering the Salkantay Trek. Their passion, organization, and genuine care for their travelers truly set them apart. If you want to discover the beauty of the Andes and Machu Picchu in a way that’s immersive, authentic, and unforgettable, go with Marvelous Peru. You won’t regret it.

The Salkantay Trek with Marvelous couldn't have been better thanks to our incredible guide, Daniel. Honestly, I've never had such a great guide. Daniel is so warm, cheerful, and energetic. He wasn't just a guide, but part of our trekking family—many guides could learn something from him! Aside from that, our group was very personable, young, and motivated. The private cooks traveling with us prepared amazing food, and there was always enough of it. I've never eaten so well on a trek. Only in the last few days, when the cooks left and provided us with food at the restaurant, did the quality of the food really suffer compared to before. The accommodations were good, the sleeping bags provided were sufficient, and Daniel, our guide, tailored the route to our group's needs so everyone was satisfied.
